The best rainy day activities in Scotland
Scotland's weather does not care about your plans, so here is a shortlist of indoor days out that hold up whatever it is doing outside.
A place tagged “good in the rain” on this site isn’t just somewhere with a roof over the entrance — it’s somewhere you could genuinely spend the whole visit indoors. Here’s where that holds up best.
Museums are the reliable default
Scotland’s big museums are free, indoor and built for exactly this kind of day. National Museum of Scotland and Glasgow’s Kelvingrove and Riverside Museum can each fill several hours on their own. If you want something more hands-on than look-but-don’t-touch, Glasgow Science Centre and Dundee Science Centre are built entirely around interactive exhibits, and V&A Dundee makes a good stop if you’re on the east coast.
When you need something more physical
Museums are calm; soft play is the opposite, and sometimes that's what the day actually needs. Indoor play centres like Frankie’s Soft Play Inverness are usually charged by session length rather than a flat entry fee, so it’s worth checking a venue’s own site for times and prices before you go — see our full indoor play list for options near you.
Castles and grand houses with proper indoor tours
Not every castle is an open-air ruin. Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle both have substantial indoor sections — the Great Hall and kitchens exhibit at Stirling hold up well against a downpour — and Glamis Castle and Scone Palace both pair furnished interiors with the option to duck back inside if the grounds turn out to be a bad idea that day.
Before you go
- “Good in the rain” and “indoors” aren’t quite the same tag on this site — some outdoor places just cope well with wet weather. Check both if you want a fully indoor day.
- Soft play sessions are usually timed, so book ahead in school holidays rather than turning up and hoping.
- Historic sites with outdoor sections, like castle grounds, are worth a quick weather check even if the building itself is covered.
